t00nz – The Dreamer

First track of the 2011 album! Slowly getting back into some kind of workflow after the break, so nice to get something completed. This was actually one of those tracks that just wrote itself in a short time (happens now and again).

Generally this year I have a couple of things I want to concentrate on musically.. One is getting more out of my gear. Another is a continuing push (that I don’t think is succeeding yet) to get some more musical ideas out (even if that means a bit of a return to basics with chiptunes or orchestral type things!).. This may happen at the cost of some production values.. but hopefully not too much so..

Also I’ve filled up my space on the new file host (google) so am probably going to be downgrading the mp3 quality to 128kbps… For those of you following the releases the 320kpbs will be up for a week or so, and after that the lower preview quality version. You can always get full quality from bandcamp, or ask me nicely

My plan is to up the remaining 2009-2010 stuff to archive.org soon, and just host the last years output on google sites, with new stuff on bandcamp!, soundcloud, internetdj etc.

Hoping to get another track out before Christmas to finalise the 2010 album, and then start on the next!

My paid web hosting ends today. It was not really offering enough to be worth the money. I can still distribute music through free alternatives, so will be testing a few of these over the next few weeks and will hopefully update some of the posts on here to point to files in a new home.

In the meantime several of the older links on this site will no longer work.

Release time comes around quick again due to a few more tracks completing together.. (This is actually the first of three things ready to be released, so expect more soon).

I’m trying to cut my costs by dropping the web hosting, so this will be my first attempt at using Bandcamp, and also in due course soundcloud and internetdj.

Expect some future adjustments to see what works (for you and me).. and to fix the podcast.

Here is a new track. I nearly held this one back.. it was a little bit ‘damned with faint praise’ elsewhere, but I think it is ok and that only makes me want to try harder anyway. I mentioned before I’ve been distracted from music a bit, maybe it shows in this. I do need to pick up a new direction soon as I’m not satisfied with my output recently. Hmm .. anyway, have a listen..maybe let me know what you think.. more music to come very soon of course. take care.

Recently bought Synplant which is turning out to be a really useful synth for what I do. It features in this track and the next, and along with uTonic is quickly becoming indispensible (much credit to sonic charge)

t00nz – The Cursed Loop

This is something I did months back and decided not to release because I was trying to concentrate on creating something more musical. But listening with a bit of perspective it has grown on me, so I changed my mind.

It is called ‘the cursed loop’ because I think this is the third completely different, fully tracked, arranged and mixed version I’ve thrown away where I’ve tried to use this strange start and end theme (It is a patch from Benedict Roff-Marsh’s Synthstudio pack 1, which I bought specifically for that sound after I hit this loop while demoing it).

Anyway, thats the liner notes.. here is the track:

Bit of a genre change up from my recent posts.. I think this falls under the umbrella of ‘jolly ditty’. Reminds me of old video game tunes a bit.

It was originally a test tune to help me to get used to Live 8 when I bought it a little while back.. and ended up being a major fight to finish off involving me losing several hours of precious time to crashes, some unrecoverable.. so in the end it is sort of getting kicked out of the door..

This piece took me a bit by surprise. Halfway working on something else, a bit of improvisation with a pad sound I was using turned into this.

Was listening to Brian Eno’s Music for Airports a week or so ago, and I think it had an impact. If you like that, then this may be worth a listen. If not, then probably not this either.

I’m not great at minimal, and think this probably needs more adding so I’m a bit conflicted, but what I do really like is how many of the notes are almost subliminal in comparison to the swells.. pulling you further in..

Maybe a personal thing.. but this captures a 3am feeling one night for me, so I’m posting it as it is !

I mentioned some while back my intention is to increase the musicality of my stuff this year (after a year trying to get the basics of sound engineering down). This feels like a bit of progress in that direction.

It is based on some unusual synth choices.. a freeware FM chip emulator (VOPM) and Oki Computer from Reaktor, with many of the sounds ‘distressed’ with a bitcrusher to get some nice artifacts and digital distortion, which I like. Hopefully the music itself prevents this all from getting too harsh.

More chilled melodies over strange glitchy backgrounds. I can’t say too much about the track, because this is starting to become a style for me.. and I guess you either get it or you don’t by now. I’m quite pleased with this one at the moment. Hits a vibe I’ve been trying to get to for a while and never felt satisfied with in my stuff, it’s abstract without being dark.

Someone started a challenge on KVR to write a track with one synth, well one synth and one drum machine.. originally Iblit and Ersdrums… and nothing else! The rules since changed to other things, but I was curious..

.. so here is my effort with 1 synth (Iblit), 1 Drum machine (ErsDrums) and no eq/fx etc of any kind.. (did double a couple of tracks up to get a chorus or delay effect on some voices).
